A subway system like San Francisco's Bay Area Rapid Transit, by comparison, will only produce about 125 grams of CO2 per passenger mile traveled, even when you factor in infrastructure. A diesel
monorail and metro stations both cost 300/week. Monorail tracks are a bit more expensive than train tracks at 1.6/week/cell. Metro tunnels however are significantly cheaper than either, at 0.8/week/cell. So even for a remote village, it is actually a lot cheaper to lay metro tunnels all the way there rather than train tracks.
The commute chosen was 8.4–9 km long (4.2–4.5 km each way depending on the transport mode) from the suburban area of the IDAEA-CSIC Institute in Pedralbes to the Diagonal metro stop on La Rambla in the city centre (Fig. 1).
