The 1.8 HGT is the only engine in the mk2 that uses locking cam caps (being derived from the Alfa Twin Spark engine), the 8v's need nothing and the 1.2/1.4 16v needs the cam locking peg (one is enough), 2 rods and pulley tool, plus the tensioner tool. Cyl 1 on downward (firing) stroke BTW.

Any hoot! My punto's done about 50k miles now. It's an 03 plate 1.2 8v punto active. I've done a minor service on it in the past (oil change, and filters change), i've only owned it for a year now. However now I'm considering renewing the timing belt.

UK/Ireland Location: Lancashire. Posted October 23, 2013. Long story cut short, my focus power steering hose broke !Removed! fluid all over my drive belt : ( so whilst I have to replace the power steering pipes and drive belts I might as well change the timing belt, the car in question is a 55 plate Ford Focus 1.6 Ti-VCT with 36k miles on.

Lower the vehicle lift to ground level, remove the air filter assembly and the coil pack. Disconnect and unclip the wiring looms running over the cam cover and remove the upper timing belt cover. Note – one bolt may be covered by the engine sticker (Fig.3) . Remove the camshaft position sensor, followed by the cam cover. Found the quote now. cambelt kit £79.90. Water pump £76. Aux drive belts £20. A/Freeze £15. Labour £152.75. Total £343. Fiat aren't keen on timing marks, preferring tools to align/synch the camshaft/ crankshaft so you quite simply make your own marks before you take the belts off. It's not difficult.

The cheapest i found new 16v locking tools was about £67. But you'll still need the cam pulley holder and the Ribe bits for the cam box and head bolts. dave said: a 1.2 16v isnt times at tdc, its at mdc you can use dowels but use 4 its hard to tell if 2 are level or not. you still need a cam locking tool.

Important note on timing procedure: The correct way to change the belt on the engine is to do it with the pistons at mid stroke (NOT Top Dead Centre); specifically piston 1 (nearest the belt) on it's intake stroke. As described in the following paragraphs the camshafts are to locked at this position for the timing belt replacement procedure.

if removing the lead with engine running makes no difference on that clyinder, and you know that the plug and lead are definately fine and sparkign, then the only possible problems are a head gasket leak on that cylinder (common on a 1.2) or an injector fault on that cylinder (very rare on the 1.2).
1) make sure the engine is cold. 1) Remove the resonator and air box etc from the engine. 3) Remove the keys from the ignition!! 4) Remove the first 2 spark plugs (the ones closest to the cambelt side). 5) Insert the knitting needle into one hole. Make sure it is straight. Make sure it is sitting on the piston. .
